iPhone Golf GPS Application Reviews: Overall Ranking

Critical Golf brings you reviews of the latest golf GPS applications for the iPhone 3G/3GS. We focus on applications that provide access to a professionally-mapped database of courses, as opposed to those that require users to map the courses themselves (such as FreeCaddie Pro, MyCaddie Pro, Caddy, Accel Golf, GolfTraxx or iYardage), or any of the apps that use the oobgolf course database (which is based on user-generated mapping), such as TeeDroid, TeeShotLive from EA, GolfCard or Smart Scorecard+, or Score Out Caddie. We also do not review those iPhone golf apps that are limited to tracking scoring only (including Golf Tracker or Golf Memoir).

One note of caution: all iPhone golf GPS applications will burn through battery life QUICKLY, and it is possible to drain a fully charged iPhone battery during the course of a round. So make sure you show up with a fully charged battery, and take a few minutes to modify your iPhone settings to preserve battery life – read our intro to iPhone golf GPS applications for more tips on how to conserve battery life. One thing is for sure, it’s not a bad idea to pick up a battery extender for your iPhone (we are partial to wraparound units such as the Mophie Juice Pack).

AirVue

A great overview of holes, with all hazard distances viewable on the satellite image, make the AirVue a valuable asset on the course. The lack of statistics tracking is a bummer, but a sweet price point ($9.99!) makes this application difficult to resist – just make sure the courses you play are available before purchasing.

GolfLogix

GolfLogix

A very polished interface and a perfect score in our course coverage test are the strengths of the GolfLogix application. But the lack of ability to determine distances to any point on the hole and a steep price tag temper our enthusiasm.

ViewTi Golf

Strong satellite images and statistics tracking make the ViewTi worth checking out. But the loading time required for each new view, combined with a confusing variation in hole orientations during play, kept us from rating it higher.

FlyCaddie

The combination of poor course coverage, lack of ability to determine distances to any point on the hole, and a pricey yearly subscription fee drop FlyCaddie quickly to the bottom of our rankings.
